The Ladybug: A Symbol of Good Fortune

The ladybug has long been a small creature with an outsized symbolic presence, carrying meanings that blend nature, spirituality, and human hope.

Farmers believed ladybugs were sent to protect crops from pests, so their arrival was seen as both practical salvation and a blessing from above. Over time, this connection to protection expanded into a broader sense of good fortune—if a ladybug landed on you, it was said to bring luck, love, or even grant wishes.

In many cultures, the number of spots on its back was thought to predict months of good luck or the number of children one might have, turning the insect into a tiny oracle of fate.

Beyond luck, the ladybug also symbolizes transformation and renewal, echoing its life cycle from larva to vibrant, winged adult. This metamorphosis gives it a quiet connection to personal growth, suggesting that change, even when it appears unremarkable or hidden, can lead to something bright and beneficial. Its vivid red shell, paired with black spots, has also lent it an association with vitality and resilience, as its coloration serves as a natural warning to predators. Despite this defense, the ladybug remains gentle in human perception, embodying a balance between strength and harmlessness.

Today, it continues to be embraced as a universal emblem of positivity—appearing in art, fashion, and folklore as a reminder that even the smallest encounters in nature can carry a sense of wonder, protection, and unexpected good fortune.

Meet The Artist

Flockbywild is an Australian fashion accessories label where heritage, artistry, and sustainability converge. Founded by Liz Wild, a designer with a lifelong devotion to fashion, textiles, pattern, and color, the brand reimagines vintage luxury silk ties as contemporary wearable art.

Drawing on more than three decades as a sculpture conservator at leading cultural institutions in Australia and the United States,  Liz brings a rare depth of technical expertise to her craft. Her work preserving Indigenous Australian, Contemporary Asian, and Pacific artworks has shaped a nuanced understanding of material, texture, and storytelling, informing every piece she creates.

Each Flockbywild accessory is handcrafted in small batches from vintage luxury ties produced by houses such as Hermès, Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, and Ferragamo. Celebrated for their vibrant hues, sophisticated prints, and enduring silk quality, these textiles are thoughtfully combined and contrasted to create cuff bracelets, earrings, and hair accessories that feel both timeless and unexpected.

At its core, Flockbywild is an act of renewal—honouring the history embedded in luxury materials while giving them new life through imaginative contemporary design. The result is a collection of distinctive accessories that speak to craftsmanship, conscious creation, and the enduring beauty of well-made things.
