The Hermes Kelly en Perles scarf's design is inspired by a naive, almost childlike drawing of the iconic Kelly bag, created by a Cameroonian artist. This artwork was initially commissioned for the 1997 "Year of Africa" and was featured on a Le Monde d'Hermès cover.

The design playfully depicts the bag with "eyes" (diamonds on either side of the handle), a "nose" (the handle itself), and a "smile" (the strap). The scarf is a reinterpretation of this artwork, rendered in the style of traditional African beaded jewelry.
