Story Behind The Scarf

The Hermes Rocabar scarf design is inspired by the striped blankets used on racehorses in the 19th century. The original Rocabar design featured an ocher-colored woolen blanket with navy blue and coral stripes. It has been reinterpreted in various fabrics and colorways, appearing as blankets, trims, and accessories. The motif is a nod to Hermès' equestrian roots, with the original design being a mustard, blue, and red woolen horse blanket.

The Rocabar motif's story begins with the blankets used to keep horses warm during races in the 19th century. Hermès, with its history in saddlery and equestrian goods, adopted this design for various items, including the iconic silk scarf. The original design, featuring stripes in navy blue, ocher (a type of yellow-brown), and coral, was a popular choice for horse blankets and later translated into other products.

The Rocabar design has been revisited by Hermès throughout the decades, appearing in different materials like wool, cashmere, and silk. It's been used on blankets, trims, and accessories, showcasing the versatility of the design. The Rocabar poncho is one example of how the motif has been incorporated into Hermès' product line, according to Hermès. The motif is not just a design element; it's a symbol of Hermès' heritage and connection to the world of horses.

FROM THE FOUNDER

I won't list a piece I wouldn't put in my own home. Twenty years of luxury retail taught me what authentic looks like — and what doesn't.
