Story Behind The Scarf

The Hermes Fantaisies Indiennes scarf, designed by Loïc Dubigeon, celebrates the richness of Indian culture and fantasy. The scarf was created to coincide with France's "Year of India" celebration in 1985/1986, reflecting Hermès' long-standing ties with India.

The design draws inspiration from the frescoes and wall paintings found in the wealthy merchants' fortified homes (havelis) of the Shekhawati region in Rajasthan, India. These paintings are known for their lively depictions of people, animals, and mythological scenes.

A prominent feature is the central Tree of Life, symbolizing creation, eternal rebirth, and connecting the spiritual realms. In both Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, the tree holds deep significance.

The scarf features mythological scenes, such as the Rajput legend of Dhola Maru, who are shown eloping on a camel.

British Influence: The scarf incorporates elements of British influence, depicting automobiles, trains, and bicycles, modes of transport preferred by the British colonialists.
