Story Behind The Scarf

The Hermès Kachinas scarf, designed by Kermit Oliver, tells a story inspired by the Hopi Kachina dolls and the spirits they represent. Kachinas, in Pueblo Indian mythology, are ancestral spirits or figures representing these spirits in ceremonial dances. The scarf depicts these figures, reflecting the Hopi tradition of using Kachina dolls to teach children about these spirits.

In Hopi culture, Kachinas are supernatural beings who are believed to visit the villages during certain times of the year, bringing blessings and messages from the spirit world. These are carved wooden dolls, often elaborately decorated, that represent the various Kachina spirits. They are traditionally given to Hopi children to educate them about the different Kachinas and their roles.

The Kachinas scarf, designed by Kermit Oliver, a highly collected American artist, pays homage to this rich cultural tradition. It features a vibrant array of Kachina figures, capturing their essence and significance.

The scarf's design serves as a visual representation of the Hopi belief system and their connection to the spirit world. It highlights the importance of these spirits in Hopi life and the role of Kachina dolls in their cultural education
