Story About The Scarf

This maritime compass features a striking windrose—a star-shaped design that points to the four cardinal directions and up to 32 intermediary ones, traditionally called "winds." First used by the Phoenicians, the windrose helped sailors navigate the seas, its vivid colors offering guidance even to those who couldn’t read.

Designer Natsuno Hidaka pays tribute to this tradition by incorporating the medieval Italian initials for each wind at the center of the star. This particular design is inspired by a motif first published in A. Schück’s Der Kompass (Hamburg, early 20th century).

One notable feature: the east wind, or Levante, is marked by a Maltese cross, symbolizing Jerusalem. Though the north wind (Tramontana) is absent, the design includes the rest of the classic Mediterranean winds—moving clockwise: Sirocco (southeast), Ostro (south), Libeccio (southwest), Ponente (west), Maestrale (northwest) and Grecale (northeast).

A timeless blend of function and artistry, the windrose remains a powerful symbol of exploration and orientation.
